Virus-like particles (VLPs) are non-infectious viral capsids enveloped in lipid bilayers that can display native transmembrane proteins with authentic glycosylation and topology. VLPs self-assemble into 100-150 nm particles, and incorporate transmembrane proteins into their membrane, resulting in presentation of the protein on the external surface of the VLP. Specific target proteins are highly expressed for purification without the need for detergents, making VLPs ideal for a variety of high-throughput applications including vaccine development, ligand-binding assays, SPR, drug discovery, and antibody production.
